Dextran Applications

Drug Delivery & Bioconjugation scaffold

Dextran as bioconjugation and carrier scaffold

Dextran can be used as a biocompatible, highly hydrophilic scaffold for drug delivery, bioconjugation, imaging, and surface-coating applications.
Its glucose-based backbone provides multiple hydroxyl groups that can be chemically modified or activated, allowing dextran to function as a spacer, carrier, stabilizer, nanoparticle coating, or attachment platform for active molecules, labels, peptides, proteins, or imaging agents.
‍
For this application, the choice of molecular weight depends on the desired conjugate size and number of attachment points. Dextran 1 is suitable when a very short, defined spacer is required with minimal increase in molecular size. Dextran 5 offers a good balance between low molecular weight, solubility, and a higher number of available hydroxyl groups, making it suitable for compact carrier conjugates.
‍
Primogene’s narrow and well-defined dextran grades are particularly suitable for bioconjugation applications, as defined chain length support reproducible conjugate design, controlled functionalization, and consistent product performance.
