Cell Culture Media Additive
Dextran as Cell Culture Media Additive
Dextran can be used as a functional carbohydrate additive in cell-culture media, where it can help stabilize cells and improve culture robustness. Its highly hydrophilic polysaccharide structure can support osmotic balance and help protect cells from process-related stress, including shear stress and osmotic shock.
Dextran is also used to reduce cell aggregation in selected culture systems, supporting a more homogeneous cell distribution during cultivation. This can improve process consistency, nutrient and oxygen accessibility, and overall culture handling. By supporting cell viability and stable growth conditions, dextran can contribute to improved protein-production process, depending on the cell line, media composition, and production setup.
The optimal dextran grade and concentration depend on the specific cell line, formulation, and production goal. For this application, defined low-MW grades such as Dextran 5 are particularly relevant when good solubility, low viscosity, and reproducible media performance are required. Primogene’s narrow and well-defined dextran grades provide controlled molecular-weight distribution and low PDI, supporting consistent performance in cell-culture media development and bioprocess optimization.
