Pharmaceutical Excipient & Lyoprotectant
Excipient for Freeze-Dried Biologics & Vaccines
Dextran can be used as a pharmaceutical excipient, cryoprotectant, and lyoprotectant in freeze-dried formulations, vaccines, biologics, and other sensitive pharmaceutical products.
Dextran can act as a pharmaceutical excipient and bulking agent, helping provide structure, mass, and formulation consistency in freeze-dried products. This is especially useful for lyophilized biologics, vaccines, peptides, proteins, and other sensitive pharmaceutical ingredients.
Dextran can function as a cryo- and lyoprotectant, helping protect active ingredients during freezing, drying, storage, and reconstitution. Its highly hydrophilic polysaccharide structure supports water interaction and matrix formation, reducing stress on sensitive molecules during the lyophilization process.
High-molecular-weight dextran may reconstitute slowly and produce viscous solutions that are difficult to withdraw or inject. Low-MW dextran grades, especially Dextran 1 and Dextran 5, dissolve rapidly and reconstitute into low-viscosity liquids, supporting fast handling and easy withdrawal of lyophilized products in clinical or time-sensitive settings. Primogene’s narrow and well-defined dextran grades provide controlled molecular-weight distribution and low PDI, supporting reproducible performance in pharmaceutical formulation development.
